After being diagnosed with cancer about 4 years ago, I knew that I had to make arrangements for myself and my kids for after I passed on. I didn’t want them to be stuck with all the emotional and financial baggage that came with planning a funeral. It’s much easier to do it yourself if you know you’re going to die. I contacted the Funeral Directors Essex co-operative had and got the ball rolling. I told them everything from what song I wanted played at the end, to the coffin I wanted, to wish to not have people spend flowers, but rather give the money to cancer research UK. I also paid for the funeral while I was there. It always seemed like a massive kick in the backside that when someone dies, you have to fork out a ridiculous amount of money to in effect get rid of them. I didn’t want that for my kids.
